While it is human nature to want to be the smartest person in the room and to attempt to prove that you know more/better than everyone else, it causes one to spend a lot of time speaking, not listening. It takes a special personality and years of practice to be a good listener. To listen is to begin to understand your wants and needs. Then we can work together to adjust budget, scope, and timelines to come up with the perfect plan. That’s where creativity comes in.

It’s rare that a project has an unlimited budget. I’ve been involved with many very high end projects that seem to have no budget, but in the end, every project has one. How to get the budget to fit your desires is where creativity starts. Being open to explore both traditional and non-traditional solutions, to look at options from multiple angles and work together to find agree upon a final solution that provides both aesthetic and monetary value is how we come up with the perfect plan.

Once we have a plan, then it’s up to process to realize the dream. Robert is very hands on. Basically, he sticks his fingers in everything. Plan design (we can create your plan, or work with your designer or Architect), structural elements, aesthetics, selections, etc. In doing so, he works as both advocate and advisor for your project. Once the project begins, Robert uses his extensive background in organization and project management to conduct the orchestra both on-site and in the office. Open, honest communication helps to set realistic expectations and create a working environment where all parties are on the same page and working for the same goal – the realization of your dream.

High Performance Building 

Auriel Building Company is dedicated to utilizing Building Science to create high performance buildings that strike the right balance between cost and performance. Robert worked on his first residential project in 1987, and honestly not a great deal has changed in the way homes are built from then to now. The building industry tends to change at a glacial pace. “We do it this way because we have always done it this way”, is something we hear often. That and, “I tried it once and it didn’t work for me”. Building a home is not like Henry Fords mass production assembly line. There is a LOT of manual labor, and with that many opportunities for variation. There are also lots of opportunities for less-than-ideal execution.

Robert has been designing architectural lighting for over 20 years. His experience and practical application of technology can dramatically change the way your home looks. The traditional approach to architectural lighting (non-decorative) is to use fixtures to blow a lot of light into the room. This approach treats all surfaces and all items of equal, and generally, low value. Good lighting design pulls out the artistic and functional requirements and addresses them with higher value than general ambient lighting. This approach creates an environment that is warm and inviting and never harsh and bright while providing ample light for tasks, emphasizing architectural features and making your artwork explode off the wall.
